Pole Dance is a unique performing art which borrows elements of gymnastics, acrobatics and dance, and involves sensual dance moves around a vertical pole.
According to Wikipedia, modern pole dancing derives from Chinese bamboo pole dancing, an acrobatic feat seen in many modern circuses, and the hoochie dancers of the twenties, who danced in tents using the main tent pole as a prop. What we know as pole dancing, according to modern mythology, started in a bar in Canada, when dancers were looking for that something different to spice up their act. These pioneering ladies turned to the Hoochie dancers and Chinese pole acrobats for inspiration and modern pole dance was born.
In a strip club setting, pole dancing is often performed less gymnastically and combined with striptease, Go-Go, and / or lap dancing between performers. As a legitimate dance and exercise discipline, Pole Fitness tones down the overall sex appeal of the art and focusses on the fitness and health benefits of pole dance as a fantastic work out. Pole dancing is now a recognised form of exercise and can provide both an excellent aerobic and anaerobic workout.
A pole dancer may simply dance around the pole, or use it to perform more athletic moves such as climbs, spins, and body inversions. Upper body and core strength are important to proficiency, which takes time to develop. Advanced pole dancing requires significant strength, flexibility and endurance.
Pole dancing is rapidly increasing in popularity as it offers the opportunity to tone your body, build strength, and help you lose weight, all while enjoying a creative and physical challenge and having a lot of fun.
